Since December 2017, Ordrupgaard has been closed due to the construction of the museum’s new extension, Himmelhaven. However, this does not mean that Ordrupgaard’s large collection of Danish artworks from the 19th and early 20th century will gather dust in storage. On the contrary, a selection of the artworks are touring in Denmark with the exhibition title Golden Age and Green Forests. 100 Years of Ordrupgaard. An exhibition that will help celebrate Ordrupgaard’s 100th birthday in 2018, now that the museum itself is prevented from doing so. The exhibition, which includes names like L.A. Ring, Vilhelm Hammershøi, Fritz Syberg, Johannes Larsen and others, visit a number of museums around the country.
Almost a hundred years ago, wealthy insurer Wilhelm Hansen had a dream. He wanted to share his impressive art collection with his fellow citizens, and together with his wife he founded Ordrupgaard in 1918. A century later, you can still visit the museum in Charlottenlund, though there has since been added an art park, an extension and new works to the collection. Wilhelm Hansen’s dream still lives. A dream that is the reason that Ordrupgaard in 2018 can celebrate its 100th birthday. The exhibition Golden Age and Green Forests. 100 Years of Ordrupgaard is focuses on some of the works that helped to establish Wilhelm Hansen as an art collector. Works that are usually part of Ordrupgaard’s permanent collection.
